With great sadness I learnt of the death of my
dear friend Dr. Michael Corry. Michael was an enthusiastic, kind, gentle,
compassionate and generous human being. He had a great understanding about
human emotional distress and suffering that caused so much pain to so many
people. He was a great warrior against injustice and the brutal practices of
present psychiatry that he campaigned to abolish in this country.
Electroconvulsive Therapy was one of those practices he also campaigned
tiredlessly against biological drug based only psychiatry in this country. He
lead a non-violent revolution to change and rattle as many psychiatrists
cages as possible to bring a more humane, holistic and embracing mental
health service to this country that enable and encourage recovery on many
patients labeled as mentally ill. As a psychiatrist he endure massive
criticism in doing so, facing the vested interest and the strong will to
maintain the status quo of psychiatry intact by many of his colleagues in
Ireland. In the words of Martin Luther King Junior "Our lives begin to end the day we become
silent about things that matter" I am glad to say Michael's life was anything but silent and I hope
we continue our lives to be outspoken about things that matter. I am sure his
spirit will continue on, stronger than ever on the struggle for the
most vulnerable in society. Proud of you Michael. You enriched my
life....thank you. Rest in Peace. Slán Michael.
