MINDFREEDOM IRELAND ELECTROSHOCK PROTEST 2025.
‘Do they still do that?’
This is the common response of the public when told electroshock is still administered in Irish psychiatric hospitals.
Electroshock involves administering up to 120 volts of electricity to a person’s brain, deliberately inducing a ‘grand mal’ seizure.
The latest figures from The Mental Health Commission show that electroshock was administered over 2000 times. Twice as many women as men were the recipients, and many are elderly.
MindFreedom Ireland is a psychiatric survivor group which campaigns for human rights. It is opposed to all forms of force, including forced drugging and calls for a complete ban on electroshock.
MindFreedom Ireland has held an annual electroshock protest since 2006. This year’s protest takes place outside the GPO, Dublin, on Saturday, May 31st, commencing at 12 noon. Testimonies will be given by people who have received the procedure.
MindFreedom Ireland can provide further information and also a person for an interview if required.
